Emiliano Zapata, born in San Miguel Anenecuilco, Morelos, on August 8, 1879, became a prominent figure in the Mexican Revolution. A skilled farmer and organizer, Zapata’s fluency in Náhuatl, the local indigenous language, helped him connect with the people. Elected village leader in 1909, he began forming an army before the revolution officially started in 1910, ultimately leading to the overthrow of dictator Porfirio Diaz.
Zapata’s Liberation Army of the South rejected the subsequent reformist government under Francisco I. Madero, continuing the fight against government forces led by Victoriano Huerta, who briefly held power after deposing Madero in 1913. At the 1914 Aguascalientes Convention, convened to determine Mexico’s future, the Zapatistas demanded “Tierra y Libertad” – land and freedom – encapsulating the core of Zapata’s “Plan de Ayala” from 1911. This plan called for the return of usurped lands, forests, and water to rightful owners and the expropriation of one-third of large properties to provide land for villages and citizens.
Zapata’s unwavering commitment to land reform led to persistent conflict and brutal repression until his assassination on April 10, 1919. He was lured to a meeting with supposedly mutinous government troops under President Carranza and tragically gunned down. Zapata’s legacy extends far beyond Mexico’s borders; his rallying cry, “Es mejor morir de pie que vivir toda una vida arrodillado” (“It is better to die on your feet than to live on your knees!”), continues to inspire those fighting against oppression worldwide.
