Viva la Mexico: Discovering Paradise at Playa Viva

My journey began with a noon arrival in Los Angeles, where my friend Matt greeted me. After a quick and enjoyable lunch at Birds with Dave, we headed to Santa Monica beach. The vibrant scene, capped by an intense ultimate Frisbee game stretching across the sand, immediately reminded me of what I loved about California – the sunsets, the air, the overall vibe. But this was just a stopover. My destination was further south, calling to me with the promise of a different kind of paradise.

Later, at 4:30 pm, I landed in Zihuatanejo, Mexico, after a somewhat turbulent 3 ½ hour flight from Los Angeles. Even before arriving at Playa Viva, anticipation was building. Johnny from the staff welcomed me at baggage claim, and we set off on a 40-minute drive through charming little towns like San Jeronimito, Petatlan, and Juluchuca. The journey itself was a taste of authentic Mexico, moving along narrow roads flanked by local life and eventually turning onto a dirt road leading us towards the Pacific.

Clearly marked signs guided us, the landscape transforming into lush fauna and gardens as we neared the coast. We even crossed a riverbed – the dry season making it easy to navigate the shallow flow. Each turn deepened the sense of escape, of leaving the everyday behind and entering something special.

Then, we arrived. Stepping onto Playa Viva was breathtaking. The online pictures, beautiful as they were, simply couldn’t capture the reality. Julia, the manager, greeted me warmly and we sat poolside as she outlined the resort, the surrounding area, and her role. As the sun began to set, casting a radiant orange glow, I was struck by the healthy shimmer on her face, mirroring the vibrant energy of the place itself. The pool, the beach (playa), the vast ocean – everything seemed to glow with the sunset’s magic. From the expansive Pacific horizon to the swaying palm trees shading hammocks, the soft sands, and even the resilient cactus, it was clear: this was an oasis. Viva La Mexico! This exclamation spontaneously arose in my mind, capturing the sheer beauty and vibrant life surrounding me.

Dinner was an absolute feast, showcasing the fresh flavors of Mexico. A generous serving of wild shrimp in their shells, fragrant rice, savory beans, a crisp salad with lettuce straight from the garden, steamed vegetables, creamy queso, and comforting broccoli soup… all homemade with love. Accompanying this incredible meal was horchata, a refreshing rice and oatmeal drink, also made from scratch. Each dish was a testament to the rich culinary traditions and fresh ingredients that define Mexican cuisine.

Now, nestled high in my bamboo cabana, a beautifully structured bungalow, the rhythmic crashing of waves fills the night. They sound incredibly close, as if just 20 feet away, though they are actually about 100 feet from my peaceful perch. A gentle warmth envelops me, the air is moist and calming, and my mind feels clear and open. Here at Playa Viva, I feel ready to explore, to learn, and to embrace this exciting new chapter. Mexico, with its vibrant spirit and natural beauty, has already begun to work its magic. Viva la Mexico, indeed!
