Former University of Oklahoma standout and seasoned professional golfer, Abraham Ancer, has officially secured his place on Team Mexico for the upcoming Paris Olympics in 2024. This selection marks Ancer’s second consecutive appearance on the Olympic stage, solidifying his position as a leading figure in Mexican golf as he aims for success at the Mexico Olympics 2024.
Ancer earned his Olympic berth through his consistent high ranking in the International Golf Federation (IGF) standings, finishing the qualification period as the second highest-ranked Mexican golfer. Currently ranked 58th globally by the IGF, Ancer will join fellow Mexican golfer Carlos Ortiz to represent their nation in the highly anticipated Paris Games.
Having turned professional in 2013 after a successful collegiate career at Oklahoma from 2010-13, Ancer has consistently demonstrated his prowess on the international golf scene. His previous Olympic experience at the 2021 Tokyo Games saw him finish in a commendable 14th place. Furthermore, Ancer’s career boasts impressive performances in major championships, including a notable presence in the final group of the 2020 Masters and top-10 finishes at the PGA Championship in both 2021 and 2022. A prominent player in LIV Golf, Ancer celebrated a recent victory at the LIV Golf Hong Kong tournament in March 2024, adding to his five professional wins over the past decade.
Beyond individual achievements, Ancer has proudly represented Mexico in team competitions. He partnered for Mexico at the 2018 World Cup of Golf, achieving a runner-up position. His strong performance at the 2019 President’s Cup for the International Team, where he earned 3.5 points, further highlights his team play capabilities, even facing off against golf legend Tiger Woods.
Ancer’s roots in golf extend back to his formative years at the University of Oklahoma. Under the guidance of current head coach Ryan Hybl, Ancer played a pivotal role in building the foundation for Oklahoma’s consistent success, contributing to their impressive streak of 12 consecutive NCAA Championship appearances. His record-setting 21-under 195 at the 2011 Desert Shootout remains a school benchmark, and his career scoring average places him among the university’s all-time top golfers.
As golf prepares for its Olympic return, having been reintroduced in 2016 after a 112-year hiatus, Abraham Ancer stands out as the sole golfer from Oklahoma University to have competed in the Games.
