This pattern uses a simple combination of single crochet and chain stitches, also known as moss stitch, linen stitch, or woven stitch, making it incredibly easy to learn and memorize. If you can master these two basic stitches, you can create this stunning, colorful blanket. Let’s get started!

Materials You’ll Need:

  • Yarn: 8ply/dk yarn in 16 different colors (or as many or few as you desire for your unique look). Using a variety of colors is key to capturing the vibrant essence of a Mexican blanket.
  • Crochet Hook: 4mm crochet hook (or adjust based on your yarn and tension). You might need a larger hook for the foundation chain to keep it loose.
  • Scissors
  • Yarn Needle: For weaving in ends.

Finished Size: Approximately 205cm x 125cm (80 inches x 49 inches). You can easily adjust the size by changing the starting chain length and the number of rows.

Gauge (Tension): 10cm x 10cm (4 inches x 4 inches) = 20 rows and 22 stitches (single crochet and chain count as one stitch each). Gauge is not crucial for this project, but it helps to estimate yarn quantity and finished size.

Crochet Pattern:

Row 1 (Foundation Row): With your first color, chain 248. Single crochet (sc) into the 3rd chain from the hook. Chain 1, skip the next chain, sc in the next chain. Repeat from to all the way to the end of the row.

Row 2 and Beyond: This row, and all subsequent rows, are worked the same way with color changes as desired. Chain 2, turn your work. Single crochet (sc) in the first chain space (ch sp) from the previous row. Chain 1, sc in the next chain space. Repeat from to all the way to the end of the row. To finish the row, chain 1, and sc in between the last sc and the chain-2 from the previous row.

Continue repeating Row 2 until your blanket reaches the desired length. The beauty of this pattern lies in the color changes!

Color Changes:

Change colors whenever you feel inspired! For a seamless color transition, change colors on the last single crochet of the row just before you finish the stitch.

  1. When you are about to complete the last single crochet with your current color, yarn over and draw through two loops on your hook.
  2. Drop the current color, pick up your new color.
  3. Finish the single crochet by yarning over with the new color and pulling through the remaining loops on your hook.
  4. Chain 2 and turn to start the next row with the new color.

Weaving in Ends: After each color change (or at the end of the project), weave in your yarn tails securely using a yarn needle on the wrong side of the blanket. Avoid crocheting over the tails as this can stretch the edges of your blanket. Weaving in after completion gives a neater finish.

Finishing Touches:

Once you have reached your desired blanket size, weave in all remaining ends. For an even more polished look, you can block your blanket. Blocking helps to even out stitches and gives the blanket a lovely drape. Simply wet block by soaking the blanket in lukewarm water, gently squeezing out excess water, and laying it flat to dry, shaping it to your desired dimensions.

Enjoy your beautiful, handmade Mexican blanket! It’s perfect for adding a vibrant touch to any room, keeping you warm on chilly evenings, or gifting to someone special.
