Four years after my initial exploration of Mexico City, I found myself drawn back to its vibrant energy. This return trip, however, was markedly different. Instead of a brief five-day vacation, I was settling in for three weeks, balancing work with exploration, and this time, I wasn’t venturing solo, as Matt joined me. The world had also undergone a significant shift in the intervening years, making the familiar feel new again.
With the passage of time, returning to a place can feel like stepping into uncharted territory, even if you’ve been there before. As I began planning a trip to Teotihuacan with Matt, I was uncertain of what awaited us at the ancient city. Were visitors still even allowed? To get a sense of the current atmosphere, I turned to a modern tool: geo-tagged Instagram posts.
I initially anticipated a feed filled with images of sun-drenched tourists, mirroring my previous visit and its memories of intense heat. Instead, my screen filled with image after image of something unexpected: hot air balloons gracefully floating over Teotihuacan.
Somehow, this captivating aspect of Teotihuacan had escaped my notice during my first Mexico City trip. It turned out that experiencing the ancient ruins of Teotihuacan from a hot air balloon is incredibly popular! As someone who actively seeks out unique and memorable travel experiences, I was immediately intrigued. A quick conversation with Matt to confirm his comfort with heights, and we were deep into researching the possibilities of a hot air balloon adventure over Teotihuacan, aiming to find the best experience at the most reasonable price.
Like any sought-after travel activity, the popularity of hot air balloon rides in Mexico City means you need to be mindful of potential scams. To help you plan your own breathtaking sunrise journey above this pre-Hispanic wonder, here’s everything you need to know about experiencing Teotihuacan by hot air balloon.

Booking Your Mexico City Hot Air Balloon Experience
Searching online for “Teotihuacan hot air balloons” or “Mexico City hot air balloons” will yield countless results. Navigating these options to find the ideal Teotihuacan hot air balloon experience at the best value requires careful attention to detail. Keep these essential tips in mind as you plan.
First, remember that Teotihuacan is situated roughly an hour outside of Mexico City. Transportation, therefore, becomes a key factor. Many tour operators offer convenient round-trip transportation from Mexico City, which is highly recommended. Some companies provide direct hotel pickup, while others designate central meeting points, requiring you to arrange your own transportation to the pickup location.
Given that most hot air balloon experiences are timed for sunrise, pickups often occur as early as 4:30 or 5:00 a.m. If hotel pickup isn’t offered, reaching a designated meeting point at this hour could mean waking up significantly earlier, depending on your accommodation’s location. Opting for a company that provides hotel pickup, or at least a convenient central pickup point, is highly advisable.
It’s also important to note that some tours focus solely on the hot air balloon flight itself and don’t include entry to the Teotihuacan archaeological zone or time to explore the pyramids on the ground. If exploring the pyramids afterward is part of your plan, ensure the tour package explicitly includes entry to the archaeological zone. We personally wanted to explore the pyramids after our flight, initially thinking we could still climb them (more on that later).
While most hot air balloon rides are shared experiences, typically accommodating around 12 passengers per basket, private flights are often available for an additional cost. A private experience can be particularly appealing for special occasions, such as a romantic sunrise proposal amidst the breathtaking views of Teotihuacan.
When we booked our flight in early June, it appeared that many companies had availability for the following day. However, booking at least 2-3 days in advance is generally recommended to secure your spot and allow ample time to confirm all logistical details. Keep a close watch on the weather forecast leading up to your flight, although most reputable companies offer rescheduling options in case of inclement weather or unsuitable flying conditions. Booking as early as possible is generally a good strategy to guarantee your place, even if last-minute bookings are sometimes possible.
Why Flying Pictures Became Our Choice for a Mexico City Hot Air Balloon Adventure
Pyramid of the Moon as seen from a hot air balloon
Extensive research led us to Flying Pictures for our hot air balloon experience. Several factors contributed to this decision:
- Comprehensive Package: Flying Pictures distinguished itself by offering a more complete experience than many other companies. Their package included direct pickup and drop-off at our Airbnb in Mexico City, as well as entry tickets to the Teotihuacan archaeological zone with time to explore after the flight. Many other operators lacked transportation or archaeological site entry in their base price, making Flying Pictures a more appealing and convenient option.
- Competitive Pricing: While some Teotihuacan hot air balloon experiences can approach $200 USD per person, Flying Pictures offered a significantly more affordable rate of approximately $150 USD per person. Considering that some of the pricier options didn’t even include hotel pickup or pyramid entry, Flying Pictures stood out as excellent value for money.
- Positive Reviews: With a 4.8-star rating based on over 160 reviews, Flying Pictures demonstrated a strong track record of customer satisfaction. As first-time hot air ballooners, we prioritized comfort and reliability, and the positive reviews instilled confidence in our choice.
We often prefer to book experiences through Viator due to their Viator Rewards Program. This program allows you to earn rewards points with each booking, which can be redeemed for savings on future Viator experiences, offering tangible value for frequent travelers.
If you prefer alternative booking platforms, such as TripAdvisor or GetYourGuide, you can also find numerous other reputable Teotihuacan hot air balloon tour operators there.
Understanding the Cost of a Mexico City Hot Air Balloon Flight
A crucial point to be aware of when booking a hot air balloon tour in Mexico City is to avoid potential scams. While some “Airbnb Experiences” might advertise seemingly incredibly low prices, such as around $20 USD, these listings can be misleading. Reviews suggest that these low-priced offerings often function as booking fees, connecting you with a standard hot air balloon company but requiring you to pay the full, actual price separately later.
If a deal appears too good to be true, it most likely is. For a legitimate and comprehensive hot air balloon experience over Teotihuacan, expect to pay around $150 USD per person or more.
Our Day Unfolded: The Ultimate Mexico City Hot Air Balloon Experience
Below is a detailed account of our Teotihuacan hot air balloon experience with Flying Pictures. You can also watch Matt’s video capturing our unforgettable day!
Keep in mind that if you choose a different tour operator, your itinerary might vary slightly, but the core elements will likely be similar. Regardless of the company you select, numerous Teotihuacan tours depart from Mexico City daily. If you opt for a different company, I’d be interested to hear about any differences in your experience!
Personalized Pickup in Roma Norte, Mexico City at 5:30 AM
Anticipating an early start, we set our alarms for 4:45 AM to prepare for our pickup. Despite the excitement of the day ahead, the summer heat made for a restless night’s sleep. Promptly at 5:30 AM, as we stepped out of our Airbnb apartment, a text message from our Flying Pictures driver informed us of his arrival. A large, white van parked on the street was ready to begin our adventure.
Arrival at Teotihuacan “Globopuerto” – Balloon Port
globopuerto – teotihuacan hot air balloons
The “globopuerto” at Teotihuacan, a bustling field where hot air balloons prepare for their sunrise flights, creating a spectacle as dawn breaks.
After two additional stops to pick up other groups – a couple and two friends – we were en route to Teotihuacan, arriving around 6:45 AM. The highway’s bumpy conditions prevented any hope of catching extra sleep during the drive. As the first rays of sunrise painted the sky, we reached the balloon port – essentially a vast field where hot air balloons were in the process of inflation. The sight was truly surreal and captivating.
Warm Coffee and Light Bites While Awaiting the Balloon Ascent
Upon exiting the van, a bilingual Flying Pictures staff member greeted us and assigned us to a specific balloon using color-coded stickers. We were directed to the sign-in area, restrooms, and invited to help ourselves to the coffee and snacks laid out for guests. For those inclined, Kahlua or mezcal were also offered as coffee enhancements – perhaps a calming option for those nervous about heights!
A 45-Minute Hot Air Balloon Journey Above the Teotihuacan Pyramids
As we prepared to lift off, joining a sky already dotted with colorful balloons, I couldn’t help but admire the aesthetics of our own balloon. Unlike some companies that brand their balloons with prominent logos, Flying Pictures’ balloon was elegantly unmarked, perfectly matching the stickers we’d received earlier. Coincidence? I suspect not.
Boarding the balloon required using designated footholds on the basket, which was divided into quadrants for passengers, with the pilot positioned in the center. Our group included the other passengers from our van plus a trio of friends, ensuring each small group had their own comfortable corner of the basket.
Soaring above the Teotihuacan pyramids
This marked my first hot air balloon flight, and I was unsure what to expect. Surprisingly, the sensation was remarkably normal. It felt like standing on a stable platform gently ascending into the sky. The unexpected steadiness made it far less daunting than I had imagined.
The hot air balloon experience offered two truly exceptional highlights. First, the panoramic view of the Teotihuacan pyramids from above provided a profound appreciation for their scale and grandeur, especially given that climbing the pyramids is no longer permitted. Second, the sight of dozens of other hot air balloons floating serenely around us was simply magical. I counted at least 30 balloons sharing the sky at one point, creating an awe-inspiring spectacle.
A Celebratory Champagne Toast Post-Flight
Our landing was remarkably smooth – a stark contrast to another balloon we witnessed making a somewhat rougher descent, clipping a few tree branches in the process! Landing in a different field from our launch point, we were transported back to the starting area by van. There, our pilot poured champagne for everyone and recounted the historical tradition of champagne toasts following the first hot air balloon flights in France centuries ago. The pilot narrated in Spanish, but thankfully, our group included enough informal translators to ensure everyone understood the charming story.
Purchase Options for Photos, GoPro Footage, and Drone Videos of Your Flight
As we boarded the balloon, Flying Pictures staff captured photos of each group. GoPro cameras mounted on the basket continuously recorded during the flight, and a drone captured our takeoff and initial ascent.
A vibrant cluster of hot air balloons fills the sky over Teotihuacan, captured from a drone, showcasing the scale of this popular experience.
After the champagne toast, we were invited to a tent to view the photos and videos, with the option to purchase them. The quality of both was exceptional. Unfortunately, the GoPro on our side malfunctioned, but we still opted to purchase the drone video, impressed by its stunning aerial perspectives. Various photo and video packages were available.
If you watch Matt’s video of our Teotihuacan hot air balloon experience, you’ll see some of the incredible drone footage we acquired!
It’s worth noting that purchasing photos and videos was entirely optional. Some less reputable hot air balloon companies reportedly pressure entire groups to collectively decide on purchasing footage, which can be uncomfortable for travelers who don’t know each other. Thankfully, Flying Pictures operates with individual choice and no pressure.
All-You-Can-Eat Breakfast Buffet at a Nearby Restaurant
Following our time at the balloon port, each group received a breakfast voucher. We boarded another white van and were driven a short distance to a restaurant named Gran Teocalli. It seemed numerous balloon companies partnered with this restaurant, as many other groups from different tours were also there for breakfast.
The buffet was extensive and satisfying, offering a wide array of options to suit various tastes. Our group had an hour for breakfast, which was more than ample time. The restaurant also featured a charming gift shop, where we picked up some delightful hot air balloon souvenirs.
Entry Tickets to Teotihuacan Archaeological Zone and Time for Exploration
Next, we re-boarded the van to head back to Teotihuacan. Intriguingly, I noticed our route differed from my previous Teotihuacan visit, where the bus dropped me off at the very beginning of the Avenue of the Dead. Recalling the long, two-mile walk, I was curious about our destination.
This time, we were dropped off in a location situated roughly between the Pyramid of the Sun and the Pyramid of the Moon, a strategically central point. Our driver informed us we would have about 90 minutes to explore the archaeological zone.
Initially, I was concerned that this wouldn’t be enough time, as my previous visit had been a full-day affair. However, two factors made 90 minutes surprisingly sufficient. First, the central drop-off point eliminated the need for lengthy walks from the main entrance to the primary pyramids. Second, due to ongoing preservation efforts, visitors were no longer permitted to climb any of the pyramids or ceremonial platforms.
In front of the Pyramid of the Moon
This meant that exploration within the archaeological zone was limited to ground level, primarily involving taking photos and seeking shade from the sun. Some members of our group opted to hire a guide for an additional fee, but Matt and I chose to explore the “city of the gods” independently.
Even in 2025, pyramid climbing remains prohibited. What began as pandemic-related restrictions has evolved into a long-term preservation strategy, recognizing that limiting foot traffic helps protect these ancient structures from further erosion.
Return Transportation to Our Airbnb, Arriving Around 1:30 PM
At the designated time, we rejoined our group and driver at the drop-off point and began the return journey to Mexico City. The drive back into the city, especially during daytime traffic, took considerably longer than the early morning trip. We arrived back at our Airbnb around 1:30 PM.
While the afternoon stretched ahead, the reality of a pre-dawn wake-up and a day of adventure quickly caught up with us. We were both asleep within minutes of arriving home.
Is Experiencing Teotihuacan by Hot Air Balloon Worth It?
I’m always seeking unique travel experiences, even if they come with a higher price tag. Visiting Teotihuacan by hot air balloon was unequivocally worth the investment. The entire day, flawlessly organized and executed by Flying Pictures, was incredibly convenient and enjoyable for us travelers. The breathtaking views of the pyramids and the mesmerizing spectacle of dozens of balloons at sunrise were truly unforgettable.
During my first visit to Teotihuacan in 2018, climbing the pyramids, including the Pyramid of the Sun and the Pyramid of the Moon, was permitted. While I understand the rationale behind the current restrictions, a part of me misses the experience of ascending these colossal structures, which was undoubtedly a highlight of that earlier trip.
Considering the current limitations on pyramid climbing, experiencing Teotihuacan by hot air balloon becomes even more compelling. Otherwise, navigating public transportation and dedicating a full day to travel to and from the site might feel less rewarding. Overall, our Mexico City hot air balloon experience over Teotihuacan was absolutely incredible, and highly recommended.

Teotihuacan Hot Air Balloon Safety in 2023
You may have heard about the unfortunate Teotihuacan hot air balloon incident in April 2023. My research, conducted in both English and Spanish sources, indicates that the company involved in the balloon fire was NOT affiliated with the local Teotihuacan hot air balloon federation and lacked the necessary permits to operate flights legally.
The company responsible was reportedly a drive-in movie theater that was clandestinely offering hot air balloon rides without proper authorization, and they do not even advertise these flights on their official website. (You can find more of my thoughts on this concerning situation in the comments section below.)
As travelers, assessing and managing risk is a personal decision. Always prioritize safety by choosing reputable companies, conducting thorough research, and avoiding any situation that feels unsafe. Wishing you happy and safe travels! 🎈
