Indeed, its popularity as a cruise destination is so pronounced that some are surprised to learn Cozumel can be a final destination in itself. While Cancun, Playa Del Carmen, and Tulum draw crowds to Quintana Roo, Cozumel beckons just across the sea, an invitation to venture off the beaten path. Whether you dedicate a day or linger for a long weekend, like I did, Cozumel promises an immersive island experience beyond the cruise ship crowds.
Cozumel, Mexico’s third-largest and most populated island, floats gracefully in the Caribbean Sea, measuring 28 miles long and 11 miles wide. The island’s northern reaches are blanketed in dense coastal vegetation, while the accessible portion unfolds along a main ring road tracing the lower half of the coastline. Cozumel’s intimate size and relaxed atmosphere might initially raise questions about filling a 3-day itinerary. However, as the day-tripping tourists retreat to their cruise ships each evening, a vibrant local nightlife emerges, welcoming those who choose to stay longer. The distant glow of Playa del Carmen fades, replaced by the sounds of the ocean and the rhythms of salsa clubs. This transformation alone makes even a single night in Cozumel a worthwhile addition to any Yucatan itinerary.

While Cozumel certainly caters to cruise visitors, its true charm unfolds when you stay longer. As the sun sets and the cruise ships depart, the island transforms. San Miguel, the main town, shifts from a bustling tourist hub to a relaxed local center. This evening ambiance offers a stark contrast to the often-crowded daytime scene, revealing a more authentic and inviting side of the island. Getting to Cozumel
Reaching Cozumel is straightforward, with options to fly directly to Cozumel International Airport (CZM) or to Cancun International Airport (CUN), the latter often being more budget-friendly. If you opt for Cancun, the journey to Cozumel involves a scenic 1-hour drive to Playa Del Carmen followed by a 45-minute ferry ride.
For the Cancun to Playa Del Carmen leg, you can choose between pre-booked private transfers, the ADO bus – a comfortable and economical option – or taxis readily available at the airport. The ADO bus is particularly recommended for its convenience and cost-effectiveness.
Once in Playa Del Carmen, head to the ferry terminal where you’ll find two primary ferry companies: Ultramar and Winjet. Both offer frequent crossings to Cozumel. While tickets can be purchased on-site, booking in advance online, especially during peak season, can provide peace of mind and potentially save time. Ultramar is the company I personally used and found their service reliable and comfortable.

For breakfast, indulge in a waterfront meal at Jeanie’s, known for its scenic views and hearty morning fare. Follow this with a caffeine fix at Coz Coffee Roasting Company, a trendy coffee shop serving expertly brewed coffee.
Stroll down Avenida Rafael Melgar, the main coastal road, browsing the artisan shops catering to tourists and cruise visitors. While shopkeepers can be assertive, embrace the opportunity to discover local crafts. Don’t miss the Plaza Central, the town’s vibrant heart, and capture a photo by the iconic, colorful “Isla de Cozumel” sign.
After exploring the town center, consider a spontaneous stop at a quirky bar – you might even find one with swings and balloon art, adding an unexpected touch of fun to your day, just as I did!
Go Snorkeling, Try Scuba Diving, Or Head to a Beach Club
Cozumel is world-renowned for its exceptional underwater experiences. No visit is complete without dedicating an afternoon to exploring its vibrant marine life. Numerous beach clubs and parks offer easy access to the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef System, the second-largest barrier reef in the world, teeming with diverse marine ecosystems.
Two excellent options near San Miguel are Chankanaab National Park and SkyReef Beach Club. Chankanaab Park combines natural beauty with Mayan history, featuring preserved Mayan village ruins alongside snorkeling and diving opportunities. SkyReef offers a more traditional beach club experience with snorkeling, diving, dining, and relaxation amenities.
I chose SkyReef and enjoyed a laid-back afternoon indulging in delicious food and drinks, relaxing on beach chairs, snorkeling in the crystal-clear waters, and even treating myself to a beachside massage. While the food is satisfactory, the overall ambiance, friendly staff, and easy access to incredible snorkeling make SkyReef a fantastic choice.
Grab Dinner in Town & Go Dancing
As dusk settles, Cozumel transforms again. With the cruise ship passengers departed, the island reverts to a more local rhythm. Take advantage of this quieter atmosphere by enjoying dinner in town. Kondesa Restaurant is a great option, offering a relaxed setting and delicious meals. I found myself almost alone there, but the staff were incredibly welcoming, and the service was top-notch, even prompting the house musician to play an impromptu set just for us!
For an authentic Cozumel nightlife experience, head to Tiki Tok, a salsa bar popular with locals. Even if you’re not a dancer, the lively atmosphere and live music are infectious. The dance floor truly comes alive after midnight, creating an unforgettable and immersive cultural experience. Don’t be afraid to join in, even with a little liquid courage!

Start your second day with a hearty breakfast at Chilaquiles, a hidden gem located next to the Chedraui supermarket parking lot. Don’t let the unassuming location fool you; Chilaquiles serves up generous portions of delicious and vibrant breakfast dishes, from colorful pancakes to traditional chilaquiles, perfect for fueling a day of island exploration.
After breakfast, rent jeeps from a local company like Smart Motorbikes for an adventurous way to explore the island. For around $25 USD per person, you gain the freedom to discover Cozumel’s less-developed eastern coast. This side of the island offers a more rugged and secluded landscape, dotted with beach clubs, bars, and scenic viewpoints along the coastal road.

As you venture inland in San Miguel, you’ll discover a more authentic and local atmosphere. For dinner, seek out a truly local taco experience at Los Seras. This unassuming eatery offers incredibly affordable and delicious tacos. For a group, the value is astonishing – my group of nine feasted on tacos and pizzas for just $28 total!
For dessert, venture next door to Oasis de Sabor and sample unique, Latin-inspired ice cream flavors like rompope and chicle for a sweet and budget-friendly treat. Enjoy a complete and satisfying local meal for under $5 per person!

Snag an ATV Tour to Go On One Last Sightseeing Adventure
If time permits, dedicate your last afternoon to an adventurous excursion. Consider renting an ATV or dune buggy to explore two unique Cozumel attractions: the San Gervasio Mayan archeological site or the Jade Caverns cenotes. Due to their remote locations, guided ATV tours are the most practical way to visit these sites. While I missed this on my trip due to an early flight, exploring a Cozumel cenote is high on my list for a return visit!
