Discovering the Unexpected Gem: Hiking Nevado de Toluca in Mexico

Okay, I’ll confess. My trip to Mexico was primarily focused on conquering Pico de Orizaba, the towering giant at 18,491 feet. To be honest, the names of the other volcanoes on our itinerary were a bit of a blur.

But let me let you in on a little secret. Out of all three mountains we climbed, Nevado de Toluca, located near Toluca In Mexico, completely stole the show.

This “small” volcano, standing at a respectable 15,354 feet, almost didn’t make the cut for our trip. We were concerned that summiting three high-altitude peaks in a single week might push our limits. Plus, Nevado de Toluca sits a bit isolated on the western side of Mexico City, unlike the other major volcanoes clustered to the east.

However, our guide wisely persuaded us that climbing Nevado de Toluca would be crucial for acclimatizing to the altitude before tackling the main challenge. Still, I didn’t get overly enthusiastic about it. I only really committed its name to memory as we were driving towards the trailhead.

So, imagine my utter surprise when this hike turned out to be absolutely stunning and incredibly enjoyable. It had it all: exciting scrambling sections and exhilarating scree skiing descents. It was, in my book, mountain heaven.

If you’re seeking a fantastic climb not far from Mexico City, I wholeheartedly recommend putting Nevado de Toluca on your list. Here’s a rundown of how to plan your own adventure.

Essential Tips for Hikers and Climbers Heading to Nevado de Toluca

Nevado de Toluca is nestled within Nevado de Toluca National Park, approximately 83 miles (135 km) west of the bustling Mexico City. This makes it easily accessible for a day trip or a weekend adventure.

Since we were part of an organized tour, a guiding company expertly handled all the logistics. For those planning a DIY trip to Toluca in Mexico and Nevado de Toluca, hiring a taxi in Toluca or renting a car are your best options. The final 7 miles leading to the parking area are on a dirt road, which can be bumpy but is manageable in most 2WD vehicles.

You’ll find convenient facilities at the trailhead, including a refugio, restrooms (with a small 5 pesos fee on weekends), and a café. Be prepared for larger crowds on weekends and holidays; overflow parking is available along the access road.

The ideal climbing season is during the dry months, from November to March. My own climb took place on November 19, 2017, under perfect conditions.

Here are some key details to help you prepare for your hike:

  • Elevation: 15,354 ft. (4th highest peak in Mexico)
  • Distance: Approximately 5 miles roundtrip
  • Elevation Gain: Roughly 2,100 ft.
  • Difficulty: Class 3 climb. The standard descent involves an extended and thrilling “ski” down steep scree slopes.
  • Recommended Gear: Don’t forget your helmet and trekking poles. Layer up with warm clothing – it gets surprisingly cold at the summit!
  • Estimated Hike Duration: Plan for a 7–9 hour day.

Nevado de Toluca is more than just an acclimatization hike; it’s a destination in itself. Its surprising beauty and fun climbing experience make it a must-do for any adventurer exploring Toluca in Mexico and the surrounding volcanic landscapes.
