Who Won the Elections in Mexico 2024?

District counts have officially confirmed Claudia Sheinbaum’s victory as the elected president of Mexico this Thursday, according to reports from El País. The Morena party candidate garnered 35,923,984 votes, slightly exceeding the preliminary figures from the Program of Preliminary Electoral Results (PREP).

Sheinbaum’s triumph has sparked diverse reactions, including from within the judicial branch. Judicial workers have publicly requested consideration in the upcoming judicial reforms. In a letter, they expressed their hope to contribute their expertise and daily experience to the reform discussions, emphasizing their understanding of the justice system’s dynamics and citizen needs.

However, Morena’s announcement to proceed with President López Obrador’s reforms in August has caused the Mexican peso to weaken.

Controversy continues to trail the electoral process even after the June 2nd election day. In Jalisco, Morena’s candidate Claudia Delgadillo has publicly accused her Movimiento Ciudadano (MC) opponent, Pablo Lemus, and his team of being a “group of criminals.” Delgadillo, who finished second to Lemus by nearly four percentage points, alleges “multiple and serious irregularities” by the Electoral Institute of Jalisco.

The release of the official election results has also ignited debates about the future of various political parties. Jesús Zambrano, the national leader of the PRD party, has refuted rumors about the party potentially losing its registration. “The district counts are still ongoing. We continue to fight to recover votes for the PRD. […] The PRD is alive. It is false that we have lost legal registration,” he asserted. Similarly, PAN senator Damián Zepeda announced his intention to contend for his party’s presidency, also engaging in self-critique regarding some of the PAN bloc’s actions.

Tragically, election-related violence persists in Chiapas. Freddy Alonso Montoya, an INE supervisor, was murdered in La Concordia municipality. Montoya was intentionally run over on a local highway. Local authorities reported finding his body beside the road, noting tire marks on his body, leading investigators to classify his death as a homicide.
