Inspired by the vibrant culture and beautiful embroidery of Mexico, a unique dress was created for a wedding in Sayulita. This Mexican Embroidered Dress blended traditional influences with a modern aesthetic, resulting in a stunning garment perfect for the occasion.
Designing the Mexican Embroidered Dress
The foundation of the dress was Simplicity’s Cynthia Rowley pattern #1104, a fit and flare design known for its flattering silhouette. The pattern’s simple construction, with one-piece front and back panels shaped by darts and tucks, allowed for customization. The dress was crafted from upholstery weight cotton for structure and a dramatic flare, eliminating the need for additional support like a crinoline.

To personalize the design, several modifications were made. Pockets were added for practicality, while the neckline was transformed into a deeper V in both the front and back for a more dramatic look. The sturdy upholstery fabric held the shape of the plunging necklines beautifully, ensuring a secure and confident fit.

The Art of Hand Embroidery
The defining feature of this Mexican embroidered dress was the intricate hand embroidery. Inspired by traditional Mexican designs found online, a unique pattern was created and meticulously stitched onto the bodice. The embroidery process was completed after the dress was sewn to allow for precise placement and adjustments.

A tear-away stabilizer was used to transfer the design onto the stiff fabric, allowing for precise stitching without an embroidery hoop. Though the stabilizer presented some challenges, the hand embroidery was successfully completed, adding a unique and personal touch to the Mexican embroidered dress.
