Mexican General Elections: CEPAL Praises Democratic Commitment and Offers Support

The Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (CEPAL) has lauded Mexico for its democratic engagement during the recent general elections. Alicia Bárcena, Executive Secretary of CEPAL, extended her congratulations to the Mexican people for the high voter turnout and peaceful conduct witnessed in the elections held on Sunday.

In a public statement, the highest representative of the United Nations regional commission also congratulated President-elect Andrés Manuel López Obrador on his victory. López Obrador is set to govern Mexico for the term of 2018-2024, marking a significant shift in the country’s political landscape.

“We reaffirm CEPAL’s willingness to collaborate with the new elected authorities, as we do with all governments in our region, in promoting sustainable development with equality at its core,” Bárcena stated. This commitment underscores CEPAL’s ongoing support for regional progress and its dedication to fostering inclusive growth throughout Latin America and the Caribbean.

The statement further highlighted the positive reactions from López Obrador’s main contenders, José Antonio Meade and Ricardo Anaya. Their swift acknowledgment of the election results and offers of support to the incoming administration were seen as a sign of Mexico’s democratic maturity. CEPAL emphasized that this exemplary conduct contributes significantly to the political, social, and economic stability of the nation.

CEPAL also expressed confidence in Mexico’s economic resilience, noting that markets have already factored in the election outcome. The commission believes Mexico’s macroeconomic strengths will contribute to economic stability throughout the remainder of 2018, even amidst an uncertain international climate. This positive outlook from CEPAL provides reassurance regarding Mexico’s economic prospects following the general elections.

The full text of Alicia Bárcena’s statement is as follows:

We congratulate the people of Mexico for the display of democratic commitment that filled the ballot boxes in the context of the general elections held on Sunday.

We also congratulate candidate Andrés Manuel López Obrador, recognized as the winner of the elections and constitutional president of Mexico for the period 2018-2024.

The generous and responsible attitude of his main contenders, José Antonio Meade and Ricardo Anaya, who recognized the result just minutes after the polls closed while expressing their willingness to support the new government in the face of the many present and future challenges, is an encouraging sign of Mexico’s democratic maturity. Their exemplary behavior contributes to the political, social and economic stability of the country.

CEPAL is convinced that the markets have already internalized the electoral result and that Mexico has macroeconomic strengths that contribute to the country’s economic stability in the remainder of 2018, within the framework of an uncertain international environment.

We reaffirm the willingness of the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (CEPAL) to collaborate with the new elected authorities, as we do with all governments in our region, in promoting sustainable development with equality at the center.
