Hope House: A New Safe Haven for Girls in CYFD Care in New Mexico

In New Mexico, a groundbreaking initiative has emerged to address the pressing issue of youth in foster care awaiting permanent placement. Hope House, a newly established group home in Albuquerque, is providing a temporary sanctuary for girls under the care of the Children, Youth and Families Department (CYFD), offering a vital alternative to prolonged stays in CYFD offices. This partnership between Youth Development Inc. (YDI), a dedicated nonprofit, and CYFD, is a significant step towards ensuring vulnerable youth receive appropriate care and support during transitional periods.

The newly renovated Hope House, featuring seven bedrooms, opened its doors in December and is designed to accommodate girls aged 12 to 17 within the CYFD system. While capable of housing up to ten girls, it currently serves four residents and has assisted six girls in total, as YDI focuses on recruiting staff to reach full operational capacity. YDI CEO Robert Chavez anticipates full staffing by the end of the current month, enabling Hope House to maximize its positive impact.

This initiative directly responds to the commitment made by CYFD Cabinet Secretary Teresa Casados in 2023 to eliminate office stays for children in care. As of January 15th, despite progress, 17 children were still in office stay situations, a number that fluctuates daily, highlighting the ongoing need for solutions like Hope House.

“Having a safe and supportive environment like Hope House is crucial for these girls,” stated Chavez. “It facilitates their recovery journey and provides the stability necessary for them to effectively progress through their individual care plans.” Hope House integrates on-site therapeutic services, with a therapist conducting daily check-ins and providing each girl with two therapy sessions per week. This addresses the complex needs of the residents, many of whom have experienced trauma, neglect, abuse, and potential trafficking.

Funding for Hope House’s operation is provided by CYFD, with significant support from federal resources. $500,000 in federal funding secured through Congresswoman Melanie Stansbury’s office has been instrumental in the property acquisition. Furthermore, YDI is collaborating with the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development to finalize the purchase of the home, ensuring long-term sustainability for this crucial resource for girls in CYFD care in New Mexico.
