After much deliberation about beach versus town, I opted for staying in Tulum Town for my first visit, a decision I was very happy with. While the allure of a beachfront stay at a place like Be Tulum is undeniable for a future trip, I appreciated experiencing the more local side of Tulum.
It’s true that the beach zone is undeniably beautiful and captivating, but it’s curated for a chic, international jet-set crowd and doesn’t fully represent everyday local life. Tulum’s beach area is unique compared to other Mexican destinations. You’ll find boutiques carrying brands common in places like Los Angeles, and many establishments are owned by Europeans or Americans. Locally owned businesses are more prevalent in Tulum Town.
Being mindful of budget and booking relatively last-minute (1-2 weeks prior), beachfront options were limited. Staying at Central Park in Tulum Town proved to be a fantastic choice. It offered a tranquil setting away from the main street, yet provided excellent amenities like a free shuttle to their beach club, complimentary beach club access, and free bike rentals. Securing a fantastic rate of $87 per night through the Hotel Tonight app was an added bonus (though regular rates may be higher).
For a friend’s bachelorette party during the same trip, we stayed at Una Vida, also in Tulum Town. While beautiful and stylish, I wouldn’t recommend it for groups larger than two. However, for couples or solo travelers, it’s a gorgeous and design-forward hotel.
