Amelia’s Mexican Kitchen, named in loving tribute to Contreras’ grandmother Amelia, is more than just a restaurant; it’s a celebration of family heritage and authentic Mexican flavors. Chef Contreras meticulously crafts each dish, drawing inspiration from his grandmother Amelia’s time-honored recipes and culinary spirit. Diners at Amelia’s Mexican Kitchen can savor classic Mexican comfort food prepared with genuine family tradition, including enchiladas, chilaquiles, quesabirria, and tamales, all infused with Amelia’s signature style.
Since opening its first location on E. Grant Rd a few years ago, Amelia’s Mexican Kitchen has expanded its reach, opening a second location on N. Oracle Rd, near Gourmet Girls, approximately a year prior. This expansion speaks to the growing popularity and acclaim of Amelia’s Mexican Kitchen within the Tucson community and beyond.

The James Beard Awards, often referred to as the “Oscars of the food world,” are highly respected accolades that honor culinary professionals who demonstrate exceptional talent, skill, and innovation in the culinary arts. This year marks the 35th anniversary of these prestigious awards, adding even more significance to Contreras’s semifinalist nomination.
The James Beard Award nominees will be officially announced on Wednesday, April 2nd. The culinary world will then eagerly await the James Beard Restaurant and Chef Awards Ceremony, scheduled to take place on Monday, June 16th, at the Lyric Opera of Chicago, where the winners will be revealed.
