New Mexico Wildfires: FBI Investigates Potential Arson

The FBI is investigating the possibility of human involvement in several devastating wildfires that ravaged New Mexico earlier this year. Evidence suggests a man and a woman may be connected to six separate fires, including the destructive Salt Wildfire near Ruidoso.

The investigation, launched in May, initially focused on 16 wildfires deemed suspicious. The involvement of multiple agencies intensified after the rapid growth of the Salt Wildfire, which consumed over 7,000 acres on the Mescalero Apache Reservation. This fire forced resources to be diverted from the South Fork Wildfire, which a separate investigation attributed to a lightning strike. Tragically, the South Fork Wildfire claimed two lives and destroyed more than 1,400 structures. Notably, the Salt Wildfire ignited approximately two hours after the initial reports of the South Fork Wildfire.

A Jeep Grand Cherokee and a pair of Vans shoes have emerged as crucial pieces of evidence in the Salt Wildfire investigation. Investigators discovered footprints near two of the fires, distinctly matching the unique waffle pattern of Vans sneaker soles. Witnesses also reported seeing the Jeep fleeing from multiple fire locations. Furthermore, a Bureau of Indian Affairs agent pulled over the Jeep, with the unidentified man and woman inside.

Analysis revealed that the tire tracks from the Jeep and the woman’s Vans matched impressions found near the fire scenes. The woman reportedly cooperated with the FBI, voluntarily providing her shoes as evidence.

Adding to the suspicion, the man allegedly reported a wildfire on May 3, falsely claiming to be a wildland firefighter who attempted to extinguish it. However, his behavior regarding the Salt Wildfire raised concerns. He reportedly admitted to seeing the fire from his home but failed to report it.

As of July 22, the investigation into these New Mexico Wildfires remains ongoing. The FBI continues to gather evidence and pursue leads in an effort to determine the cause of these devastating fires and hold those responsible accountable. The potential for arson underscores the serious threat of human-caused wildfires and the importance of fire safety awareness.
