Mexico, a country that has long captured my imagination, finally became a reality. Its vibrant culture, ancient mysteries, and breathtaking landscapes beckoned, promising an adventure unlike any other. My journey began with a flight from Athens to the bustling Mexico City, followed by eight days immersed in its urban charm and surrounding day trip escapes. Then, the turquoise waters of the Caribbean called, leading me to Cancun in the state of Quintana Roo. From there, a rented car became my trusty companion as I explored the coastal wonders of Tulum, the serene beauty of Valladolid, and the island paradise of Holbox. My Mexican adventure concluded with a flight from Cancun back to my home in Athens, Greece, leaving me with memories to last a lifetime. Traveler’s Note: Getting to Tulum just got easier! As of December 2023, Tulum boasts its own international airport, conveniently located approximately 32 km (20 miles) from the town center.
Mexico, officially known as the United Mexican States, is a diverse federation of 32 states. Beyond the famed Mexico City, states like Baja California Sur, Campeche, Chiapas, Guanajuato, Hidalgo, Oaxaca, Puebla, and of course, Quintana Roo, offer unique slices of Mexican paradise.

Quintana Roo, or Q.r. Mexico as it’s often abbreviated, is a jewel on the Yucatán Peninsula, bordered by Campeche and Yucatán states. This exotic state is home to the Riviera Maya, a stunning 40 km corridor stretching from Cancun to Tulum. Imagine a line of incredible destinations: Puerto Morelos just south of Cancun, the lively Playa del Carmen, tranquil Akumal, the trendy Tulum, and finally, the untouched beauty of Punta Allen.

Q.R. Mexico is a land of wonders, boasting:
- The globally recognized cities of Cancun and Tulum.
- Idyllic islands like Cozumel, Holbox, and Isla Mujeres.
- Charming towns such as Bacalar, Playa del Carmen, and Akumal.
- Majestic ancient Maya ruins whispering tales of the past.
- Over 6,000 cenotes, nature’s mesmerizing swimming holes. These cenotes, formed by collapsed limestone, reveal hidden pools perfect for a refreshing dip. They are broadly categorized as open, semi-open, and closed, each offering a unique experience. Scientists believe a prehistoric asteroid impact played a role in their creation – a true natural marvel!

Quintana Roo stands out as one of Mexico’s premier destinations, with many travelers choosing to focus solely on this captivating state for their Mexican getaway. Traveler’s Tip: For me, the cenotes are the soul of Q.R. Mexico. You won’t find these natural wonders in Mexico City or many other states, making them an unmissable experience. Aim to explore at least 2-3 different cenotes to truly appreciate their diversity.
Essential Information for Your Q.R. Mexico Adventure:
- Official Language: Spanish, but English is widely spoken in tourist areas.
- Currency: Mexican Peso (MXN).
- Tap Water: Not safe for drinking – stick to bottled water.
- Tipping: 10-15% is customary in restaurants.
- Main Airport: Cancun International Airport (CUN).
- Transportation: Renting a car is highly recommended for exploring at your own pace. Alternatively, Uber, bike rentals, and the ADO bus line are available. Bookaway is a convenient site for booking ADO buses. If your trip is centered around islands or beach resorts in Tulum and Cancun, a car might not be necessary. Traveler’s Tip: I used Alamo Rent a Car at Cancun airport, though the contract was through Hertz. Be mindful of time differences within Mexico; Mexico City and Cancun are in different time zones.

While Cancun may not offer the most “authentic” Mexican experience, it delivers on high-energy fun and relaxation.

Located a 1.5-hour drive from Cancun airport and 30 minutes from Tulum, Akumal is a tranquil beach town on the Riviera Maya. It’s the perfect destination for beach relaxation, luxurious all-inclusive stays, and, most famously, turtle sightings! Akumal is renowned for its protected turtle nesting sites and snorkeling opportunities where you can swim alongside these gentle creatures.
TULUM TOWN
Tulum, often dubbed the “Ibiza of Mexico,” is a hotspot of chic beach clubs, upscale restaurants, stylish hotels, and breathtaking beaches. This trendy town comes with a higher price tag and a vibrant party atmosphere. Traveler’s Tip: I personally loved Tulum’s energy and offerings. However, it’s worth noting that some travelers feel it lacks the “authentic” Mexican vibe and can be expensive.

- Tulum is famous for its Instagrammable spots: murals, the “Ven A La Luz” sculpture, the “Follow that dream” sign, and the Tulum jungle gym.
- Azulik Hotel Sunset Experience: Traveler’s Tip: Arrive before 5 PM as it’s first-come, first-served and space is limited.

BACALAR
Bacalar, often called the “Maldives of Mexico,” is a true paradise. Its lagoon is famous for its “7 shades of blue” water and is the second-largest freshwater lagoon in Mexico. Located 4-5 hours from Cancun airport and 2-3 hours from Tulum, it’s worth the journey.
Los Rapidos Lagoon: Arrive when it opens at 10 AM to avoid afternoon crowds. Float along the current or rent a kayak to explore this stunning natural river.

ISLA HOLBOX
Stepping onto Isla Holbox felt like stepping back in time. This magical, authentic, and tranquil island north of the Yucatán Peninsula offers a unique escape. Important Note: Bring cash as card payments can be limited. Also, be aware that Holbox is not a budget-friendly Mexican island, and occasional water or electricity issues can occur.
Is it worth visiting? Absolutely YES!

Getting to Holbox: Take a 30-minute ferry from Chiquila town (mainland) to Isla Holbox (approx. 200 MXN or 10€/$). Ferries depart every half hour from two companies; tickets can be purchased upon arrival. Chiquila is a 2-3 hour drive/bus ride from Tulum, Cancun, or Cancun airport.

ISLA COZUMEL
Cozumel, the largest Mexican Caribbean island, is a short 30-minute ferry ride from Playa del Carmen, making it a perfect day trip or longer stay destination. Ferries run frequently from morning to night by three different companies.
Diving Paradise: Cozumel’s surrounding reef is considered the second-best in the world after Australia’s Great Barrier Reef.

- San Miguel Town: Explore downtown San Miguel, rent a bike, and admire the murals.
- Beach Relaxation: Choose from numerous beach bars and clubs. Traveler’s Tip: El Cielo beach, a 1-hour ferry from Cozumel port, is a must-visit.

ISLA MUJERES
Isla Mujeres, a charming island just off the coast of Cancun (30-minute ferry), is known for its relaxed atmosphere, beautiful beaches, resorts, and excellent snorkeling and diving.
- Stay a Night or Two: Ideally, spend 1-2 nights to fully appreciate the island vibe. Otherwise, a day trip from Cancun is a popular option.
- Golf Cart Exploration: Rent a golf cart (around $50 USD per day) to easily explore the island.
- Playa Norte: Relax on the famous Playa Norte beach. For a quieter spot, head south.
- Punta Sur: At the southern tip, find a lighthouse, Mayan temple remains, and a sea turtle sanctuary where you can volunteer to protect turtle eggs.
- Whale Shark Encounters: (July-August, conditions permitting) Swim with whale sharks, dolphins, and turtles – a magical experience!
- Rosa Sirenas: Enjoy delicious food and live music with a reservation.

MUST-DO DAY TRIP
While technically in the neighboring state of Yucatán, a day trip to Valladolid and Chichen Itza from Tulum is highly recommended. Chichen Itza is one of the New 7 Wonders of the World. Explore cenotes near Valladolid as well.

GENERAL TRAVEL TIPS FOR MEXICO
Drinking Water: Avoid tap water in Mexico City and Q.R. Mexico. Bottled water is readily available and recommended.
Plugs: Mexico uses US-style plugs, Type A (two flat parallel pins).
Tipping: 10-20% is customary in restaurants.
Visa: Visa requirements vary by nationality. As a Greek citizen, a visa is generally not needed for short tourist or business visits (under 180 days). Traveler’s Tip: Always double-check current visa regulations based on your citizenship and ensure your passport is valid for at least 6 months beyond your intended stay.
