Discovering the City of Rocks
As you approach City of Rocks State Park, the journey itself sets a tranquil tone. Driving along quiet highways and paved roads, you might pass by Faywood Hot Springs, a local gem known for its relaxing hot springs. However, the true spectacle remains hidden until you are almost at the park’s entrance. Suddenly, the landscape transforms, revealing the impressive city of rocks. This geological marvel is composed of volcanic rock, sculpted over millennia by the relentless forces of wind and water. The result is a mesmerizing collection of smooth, rounded boulders that seem to melt into each other, forming natural pathways and intriguing spaces to explore.

Upon arrival, a visit to the visitor center is highly recommended. Park rangers are a wealth of information, providing the latest updates on park conditions, detailed maps, and memorable souvenirs. For visitors with dogs, like myself, the rangers offer valuable advice. Learning about recent wildlife sightings, such as mountain lions, elk, and bears, ensures you can take necessary precautions to keep your pets safe while enjoying the park’s natural beauty. While the rangers might initially be concerned about pet safety, they quickly recognized that my larger dogs were more likely to deter wildlife than become prey.

Camping Under the Stars at City of Rocks State Park
Choosing a campsite at City of Rocks State Park is a delightful task, as each spot offers its own charm. The park ranger thoughtfully provided recommendations to find a more sheltered spot, considering the windy conditions on the day of my visit – a testament to the personalized service and local expertise available. Engaging with park rangers often reveals invaluable insights that enhance your experience in unexpected ways.
Campsite fees are reasonably priced at $10.00 per night. While some campsites are reservable, offering the convenience of advance booking, others operate on a first-come, first-served basis. During off-peak seasons, relying on the first-come-first-served options is often sufficient, especially if you don’t require electrical hookups. Each campsite is equipped with essential amenities, including a picnic table and a campfire ring. Conveniently located garbage cans are available throughout the campground, and pit toilets are readily accessible. For those seeking more comfort, flush toilets and showers are available at the visitor center.

Embracing Digital Detox
One aspect to note is the limited cell reception within most of City of Rocks State Park. This digital disconnection can be initially surprising but quickly transforms into an opportunity for a true escape. On one occasion, an unexpected downpour began just as I arrived at my campsite, before even setting up my tent. Necessity became the mother of invention, and my vehicle temporarily became my shelter. Repurposing gear and creating a cozy space inside the car turned an inconvenience into a unique experience of relaxation.
This unexpected downtime led to listening to pre-downloaded podcasts, including an episode about unplugging from technology. Ironically, being forced to disconnect highlighted the very topic of the podcast. When cell service was briefly available while hiking later, the conscious decision was made to remain disconnected, using the phone only for capturing photos. This intentional digital detox proved to be incredibly refreshing, enhancing the experience of being present in the natural surroundings.
