While Mazunte isn’t officially designated as a nude beach, you’ll still find a clothing-optional atmosphere in certain areas. In fact, across many beaches in Oaxaca, with the exception of a few more family-oriented spots, it’s not uncommon to spot people enjoying the sun au naturel.
Mazunte’s main beach is known for its stronger waves, attracting surfers, while Playa Rinconcito offers calmer waters ideal for swimming. Both beaches are beautiful and easily walkable from one to another, though you might need to navigate some rocky sections along the shoreline. Compared to Zipolite, I’ve found Mazunte to be generally more bustling and lively, with a slightly more crowded feel. The deluxe double rooms even feature bathtubs designed for two, making it ideal for couples, but the hotel’s social atmosphere also makes it welcoming for solo travelers.

Getting to Zipolite Beach: Your Transportation Guide
Driving to Playa Zipolite Beach in Mexico
Reaching Zipolite is surprisingly straightforward. My friend and I opted to rent a car in Oaxaca City and drove to the coast, a scenic journey of about six hours. While much of the drive winds through mountains, the breathtaking views, charming small towns, and the flexibility to explore various beaches along the coast made it an enjoyable experience. The car rental cost around $50 per day, and gas for the entire trip was approximately $60, thanks to our fuel-efficient sedan.
Alternatively, you can fly into Puerto Escondido airport, about an hour from Zipolite, from either Mexico City or Oaxaca City. Both are short flights, around an hour in duration. Huatulco airport is another option, located about 40 minutes from Zipolite. From either Puerto Escondido or Huatulco, you can take a colectivo (shared taxi) to Zipolite for around 200 pesos (approximately $10 USD).
Many backpackers also choose the overnight bus from San Cristóbal de las Casas to Puerto Escondido. This route is popular for those traveling from Cancún through Chiapas towards the Oaxacan coast. I’ve taken this overnight bus myself and found it to be a convenient and budget-friendly option. However, if you’re prone to motion sickness, be sure to take a Dramamine before boarding due to the winding mountain roads. Bus tickets are typically around $25 USD.
Zipolite truly felt like stepping back in time to the 1970s, a time of breaking societal norms and embracing personal freedom. The vintage cars I spotted around town added to this groovy, nostalgic vibe, which I found incredibly charming.
