Unveiling the Best Things to Do In and Around Zipolite Beach

1. Embrace the Art of Doing Absolutely Nothing

In Zipolite, one of the most rewarding experiences is simply allowing yourself to unwind completely. This is a place where the concept of “chill” is elevated to an art form. To truly immerse yourself in the authentic beach culture of Zipolite, dedicate at least an afternoon to pure, unadulterated relaxation.

The main beach of Zipolite is the heart of this laid-back paradise. Here, you’ll find fellow travelers and locals alike, all basking in the warm Mexican sun and embracing the unhurried rhythm of coastal life. Join them in this blissful state of repose. Settle into a complimentary beach chair under the shade of an umbrella – often provided with a purchase of a refreshing cold drink – and lose yourself in the simple pleasure of being present. Let the gentle sound of the waves and the warmth of the sun melt away any stress, and simply be in Zipolite.

2. Dare to Go Bare: Embracing Nudity in Zipolite

The notion of a nude beach can be liberating for some and daunting for others. When I mentioned to my friends back home that I was visiting Mexico’s famous nude beach, their reaction was one of amusement and understanding. For me, embracing new experiences is part of the joy of travel, and the idea of a nude beach was intriguing rather than intimidating.

However, I recognize that for many, the thought of disrobing in front of strangers can be a source of anxiety. Our society often bombards us with unrealistic ideals of body image, leading to insecurities about our own bodies. It’s understandable to feel apprehensive.

What struck me most about Zipolite beach was the remarkable absence of judgment. People of all shapes and sizes were confidently embracing their bodies, and there was a refreshing lack of critical glances or self-consciousness. The atmosphere was one of acceptance and freedom. Personally, I felt incredibly comfortable going topless, and surprisingly, I noticed less unwanted attention than I often experience in clothed settings. Zipolite, in its own unique way, felt like a place where societal norms about body image were gently challenged and redefined.

3. Discover the Vibrant Street Art Scene

Mexico’s vibrant culture is often expressed through art, and in Zipolite, the streets themselves become a canvas. The town is alive with colorful murals and artistic expressions that add to its unique character. Exploring this street art scene is an absolute must-do during your visit.

Take a leisurely walk along the main street that parallels the beach, and venture down the smaller side streets branching off from it. You’ll find that many of these alleyways are virtually transformed into open-air art galleries, covered in captivating murals. Even the street just one block inland from the beach boasts impressive artworks. Allow yourself to wander, discover hidden artistic corners, and appreciate the creativity that flourishes in Zipolite.

4. Indulge in Authentic Local Flavors

When you’re on the Oaxacan coast, immersing yourself in the local culinary scene is essential. Start by visiting the fruterías, the fruit stands overflowing with the vibrant colors of seasonal produce. During my visit to Zipolite, I was delighted to find oranges in abundance, and starting each day with freshly squeezed orange juice became a ritual.

Being a coastal town, Zipolite is also renowned for its fresh seafood. I highly recommend trying aguachile, a dish similar to ceviche but elevated with a zesty and spicy sauce made from avocado, cucumber, and citrus. For those who prefer to avoid seafood, inquire about a vegetarian aguachile option, often prepared with jicama or mushrooms as a delicious alternative. Explore the local restaurants and beachside eateries to savor the authentic tastes of Zipolite and the Oaxaca coast.

5. Find Your Zen with a Yoga Session

Spend just a short time on Zipolite beach, and you’ll likely notice a significant number of people engaged in fitness activities, from running and workouts to the mindful practice of yoga. While the exact reason for this active beach culture is a bit of a mystery, Zipolite seems to attract those who value wellness and movement. I personally observed more people exercising on Zipolite’s sands than on any other beach I’ve visited in Mexico or elsewhere.

If you’re a yoga enthusiast, Zipolite is the perfect destination to deepen your practice. Consider taking a class at La Loma Linda, a well-regarded yoga center in the area. Alternatively, keep an eye out for signs advertising sunset yoga sessions directly on the beach – an incredibly serene way to connect with your body and the natural beauty of Zipolite as the sun dips below the horizon.

6. Shop and Wander Through Unique Boutiques

While I don’t consider myself a dedicated shopper, I genuinely enjoy exploring new places on foot and browsing local shops to soak in the atmosphere and discover unique items. Zipolite is an ideal place for this kind of leisurely exploration, offering a delightful array of small, independent stores brimming with handmade goods and local crafts.

You’ll find everything from traditional Oaxacan textiles, showcasing the region’s rich artistic heritage, to intricately crafted wire-wrapped jewelry, and practical beach essentials like surfboards and snorkel gear. Strolling through the charming side streets of Zipolite, admiring the vibrant bougainvillea in full bloom, towering cacti, and other lush flora that thrives in this coastal climate, is a simple yet deeply enjoyable experience.

7. Embrace Freedom on Two Wheels: Rent a Scooter

During my visit, I had the convenience of a rental car, so scooter rental wasn’t a necessity. However, for my next trip to Zipolite, I’m definitely planning to rent a scooter. Scooters offer a significant advantage for accessing the smaller, more secluded beaches nestled near Zipolite that can be trickier to reach by car.

Scooters are also incredibly nimble, making them ideal for navigating sandy areas where cars might get stuck. Plus, at around $20 per day, scooter rentals are considerably more budget-friendly than car rentals. You won’t find online booking options for scooters in Zipolite, so simply wait until you arrive. The main street is lined with rental shops offering similar rates and services.

8. Day Trip to Mazunte: Explore a Neighboring Paradise

Mazunte and Zipolite are often mentioned in the same breath, particularly among backpackers exploring the Oaxacan coast. These two charming towns are conveniently located just a short 15-minute drive apart and share a similar laid-back, bohemian vibe. It’s common to hear travelers easily hopping between Zipolite and Mazunte to experience the best of both worlds.

While Mazunte isn’t officially designated as a nude beach, you’ll still find a clothing-optional atmosphere in certain areas. In fact, across many beaches in Oaxaca, with the exception of a few more family-oriented spots, it’s not uncommon to spot people enjoying the sun au naturel.

Mazunte’s main beach is known for its stronger waves, attracting surfers, while Playa Rinconcito offers calmer waters ideal for swimming. Both beaches are beautiful and easily walkable from one to another, though you might need to navigate some rocky sections along the shoreline. Compared to Zipolite, I’ve found Mazunte to be generally more bustling and lively, with a slightly more crowded feel. It’s definitely worth a visit, but personally, I find myself drawn back to the more tranquil and relaxed atmosphere of Zipolite.

9. Discover Marine Conservation at the Centro Mexicano de la Tortuga

For wildlife enthusiasts and those interested in conservation, the Centro Mexicano de la Tortuga (Mexican Turtle Center) is a worthwhile visit near Mazunte. This center plays a crucial role in protecting various species of sea turtles. Of the eight different sea turtle species found worldwide, you can observe and learn about three of them at this center.

Unfortunately, the center was closed during my visit to Mazunte, which was a disappointment as I was eager to learn more about these fascinating creatures. Public information regarding the center’s opening hours can be limited, so if you find yourself in Mazunte, it’s worth checking to see if it’s open for visitors.

10. Witness a Breathtaking Sunset at Punta Cometa

While Zipolite boasts stunning sunsets, my absolute favorite sunset viewing spot in the area is Punta Cometa in Mazunte. This dramatic rocky cliff offers panoramic views of the coastline below, and during my visit, I was even fortunate enough to spot whales breaching in the distance. Punta Cometa is Mazunte’s most popular sunset destination, so expect to share the experience with other sunset admirers. To secure a good viewing spot, aim to arrive early, around 5 pm if sunset is around 6:30 pm.

To reach Punta Cometa, you can park near the hotel La Casa de María and follow the clearly marked signs. Alternatively, it’s walkable from the main street in Mazunte, taking approximately 30 minutes.

11. Experience Local Life in Puerto Ángel

Just a short 10-minute drive from Zipolite beach, in the opposite direction from Mazunte, lies Puerto Ángel. Unlike the neighboring hippie-chic towns, Puerto Ángel retains a more authentic, less tourist-driven atmosphere. It’s primarily a working fishing village, with colorful boats lining its shores. While swimming is possible, the beaches are generally quieter, and the bay’s sheltered location ensures calm waters throughout the day.

I highly recommend visiting Puerto Ángel in the morning to savor a traditional Mexican breakfast and cafecito at Las Palmas de Don Cuco, a charming beachfront restaurant. Here, you can enjoy beautiful ocean views and get a glimpse into the daily life of a traditional, sleepy Mexican fishing town, a refreshing contrast to the more tourist-oriented neighboring towns.

Where to Stay in Zipolite: Accommodation Options for Every Budget

Zipolite’s main pedestrian street, the vibrant heart of the town, is lined with a diverse selection of boutique hotels and budget-friendly hostels, catering to a range of travel styles and budgets.

Budget-Friendly Bliss: Castillo Oasis, Around $36/Night

Zipolite offers numerous affordable hostels, many providing private rooms in the $30-$50 per night range. Castillo Oasis stands out as an exceptional value, located just a three-minute stroll from the beach. It’s rare to find accommodation so close to the shore at such a budget-friendly price point.

Castillo Oasis exudes a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere, with a traditional palapa-style roof and inviting hammocks perfect for unwinding. For budget-conscious travelers, Castillo Oasis is undoubtedly the best value for your money in Zipolite. Book your stay here.

Mid-Range Comfort: Hotel Descalzo, $100-$160/Night

Hotel Descalzo, aptly named “Barefoot Hotel” in English, is a beachfront haven offering spacious rooms and a range of amenities including a restaurant, bar, and lush garden. A refreshing swimming pool adds to the relaxing ambiance. The deluxe double rooms even feature bathtubs designed for two, making it ideal for couples, but the hotel’s social atmosphere also makes it welcoming for solo travelers.

Prices at Hotel Descalzo vary depending on room type, season, and weekday/weekend bookings, but expect to budget between $100-$160 per night. You can book here.

Luxurious Nude Escape: Hotel Nude, $90-$215/Night

For a truly immersive Zipolite experience that aligns with the town’s free-spirited ethos, consider Hotel Nude, a unique clothing-optional hotel unlike any other. While its romantic ambiance might suggest it’s solely for couples, Hotel Nude is surprisingly popular among solo female travelers as well! Although I didn’t personally stay there, a friend raved about her experience, enjoying the social atmosphere around the pool and connecting with fellow guests.

While Hotel Nude’s price range is comparable to Hotel Descalzo, it offers a more luxurious experience with amenities like a spa and upscale beachfront seating. Explore Hotel Nude here.

Getting to Zipolite Beach: Your Transportation Guide

Driving to Playa Zipolite Beach in MexicoDriving to Playa Zipolite Beach in Mexico

Reaching Zipolite is surprisingly straightforward. My friend and I opted to rent a car in Oaxaca City and drove to the coast, a scenic journey of about six hours. While much of the drive winds through mountains, the breathtaking views, charming small towns, and the flexibility to explore various beaches along the coast made it an enjoyable experience. The car rental cost around $50 per day, and gas for the entire trip was approximately $60, thanks to our fuel-efficient sedan.

Alternatively, you can fly into Puerto Escondido airport, about an hour from Zipolite, from either Mexico City or Oaxaca City. Both are short flights, around an hour in duration. Huatulco airport is another option, located about 40 minutes from Zipolite. From either Puerto Escondido or Huatulco, you can take a colectivo (shared taxi) to Zipolite for around 200 pesos (approximately $10 USD).

Many backpackers also choose the overnight bus from San Cristóbal de las Casas to Puerto Escondido. This route is popular for those traveling from Cancún through Chiapas towards the Oaxacan coast. I’ve taken this overnight bus myself and found it to be a convenient and budget-friendly option. However, if you’re prone to motion sickness, be sure to take a Dramamine before boarding due to the winding mountain roads. Bus tickets are typically around $25 USD.

Zipolite truly felt like stepping back in time to the 1970s, a time of breaking societal norms and embracing personal freedom. The vintage cars I spotted around town added to this groovy, nostalgic vibe, which I found incredibly charming.

So, are you ready to experience the unique allure of Zipolite, Mexico’s original and only legal nude beach? It’s a destination that promises liberation, relaxation, and an unforgettable connection with nature.
