Discover Telum Mexico: Your Ultimate 7-Day Tulum Adventure Guide

The Yucatán Peninsula in Mexico is a treasure trove of experiences, famed for its stunning Caribbean coastline, pristine white-sand beaches, and the inviting turquoise waters, all embraced by a lush tropical jungle. For travelers seeking more than just sunbathing, this region promises a blend of relaxation and adventure. Tulum, situated roughly two hours south of Cancun, offers a unique contrast to the large, all-inclusive resorts prevalent elsewhere. Here, boutique hotels and a bohemian atmosphere reign supreme. Tulum’s reputation is varied; some hail it as a breathtakingly beautiful, spiritual haven—often drawing comparisons to Bali—while others find it overrated, citing its rapid growth and evolving character distinct from traditional Mexico.

Having spent nearly a month in Tulum, I experienced firsthand the truth in both perspectives. Tulum is truly unique, captivating with its beaches, jungles, cenotes, and ancient Mayan ruins. However, the increased traffic, upscale dining prices mirroring those of New York, and the pervasive Instagram aesthetic, while stylish, can sometimes feel overwhelming.

Despite these complexities, I believe there’s a way to truly appreciate Tulum’s undeniable charm and make a visit worthwhile. Based on my extended stay, I’ve compiled a guide featuring my favorite activities and experiences, designed to offer a balanced itinerary of adventure and relaxation for your first week in “Telum Mexico”, or Tulum, Mexico.

Your Comprehensive One-Week Itinerary in Telum Mexico (Tulum, Mexico)

DAY 1: Embrace the Telum Mexico Beach Vibe

Alt text: A woman sits peacefully under a palapa on the white sands of Tulum beach, enjoying the serene atmosphere of Telum Mexico.

Telum Mexico, or Tulum, consistently ranks among Mexico’s top beach destinations. Its appeal lies in the powdery white sand, swaying palm trees lining the shore, and the gentle, pastel-hued waters of the Caribbean Sea. Begin your Telum Mexico journey by immersing yourself in the quintessential beach experience. Relax on the soft sand, sip a refreshing cocktail or a cold cerveza, and let the tranquil atmosphere wash over you.

There are three primary ways to enjoy the beaches of Telum Mexico:

Luxury Beachfront Hotels in Telum Mexico

The beachfront in Telum Mexico is lined with an array of hotels and resorts that boast exclusive access to the ocean. While generally more expensive than accommodations in Tulum town or other areas, these beachfront properties offer the unparalleled luxury of waking up mere steps from the Caribbean Sea. If your budget allows, even for a night or two, the beachfront hotel experience in Telum Mexico is highly recommended.

For personalized hotel recommendations in Telum Mexico, please refer to the end of this guide!

Telum Mexico Beach Clubs

For those not staying directly on the beach, Telum Mexico’s vibrant beach clubs provide an alternative way to enjoy the beachfront. These clubs offer amenities like sun loungers, restaurants, bars, and sometimes pools, allowing you to experience the beach in comfort and style. During my time in Telum Mexico, I visited or heard excellent reviews about these beach clubs:

Public Beaches in Telum Mexico (North Playa)

Alt text: A smiling woman stands on a public beach in Telum Mexico as the sun sets, casting a warm glow over the tranquil scene.

For a more laid-back and budget-friendly beach day in Telum Mexico, head to one of the public access beaches. These beaches are just as beautiful as the hotel and beach club areas, offering the same stunning white sand and turquoise waters, but with a more relaxed and less crowded atmosphere. Bring your own towel and refreshments and enjoy the natural beauty of Telum Mexico at these public beaches:

  • Las Palmas
  • Playa Paraiso
  • Playa Ruinas

DAY 2: Discover Telum Mexico Cenotes and Tulum Town

After a day of beach relaxation, Day 2 in Telum Mexico is dedicated to exploring another iconic feature of the region: cenotes. These natural sinkholes, filled with crystal-clear freshwater, offer a unique and refreshing swimming experience. In the afternoon, venture into Tulum Town to experience the local culture and more affordable side of Telum Mexico.

Cenotes of Telum Mexico

Alt text: A woman wearing snorkel goggles explores the depths of Cenote Dos Ojos, a famous cenote in Telum Mexico known for its clear waters and underwater caves.

Alt text: A woman enjoys a swim in Cenote Calavera, a unique sunken cenote in Telum Mexico that offers adventurous jump-in access.

Alt text: A woman carefully climbs down the steps to enter Cenote Dos Ojos, a popular and easily accessible cenote in Telum Mexico.

No guide to Telum Mexico would be complete without highlighting the breathtaking cenotes of the Yucatán Peninsula. These natural wonders are abundant near Tulum, and I highly recommend visiting at least one or two during your stay in Telum Mexico. I personally explored Dos Ojos (my personal favorite), Zacil-Ha (perfect for swimming and sunbathing), and Calavera (an exciting sunken cenote with jump access!). Here’s a list of cenotes near Telum Mexico that are highly recommended:

  • Dos Ojos
  • Zacil-Ha
  • Calavera
  • Gran Cenote
  • Casa Cenote
  • Carwash
  • Casa Tortuga

When visiting cenotes in Telum Mexico, expect to pay an entrance fee and an additional charge for cameras or drones. Typically, I spent between 45 minutes to two hours at each cenote, depending on its size and features.

Explore Tulum Town in Telum Mexico

After your cenote adventure, it’s time to discover Tulum Town, distinctly different from the beach area. Located about 20-45 minutes inland from the beach by car or bike, Tulum Town offers a more authentic and budget-friendly Telum Mexico experience. While the beach zone is known for glamour and high prices, the town is more relaxed, local, and affordable. Wander through the streets, browse local shops, and enjoy a meal or drinks at significantly lower prices than you’ll find near the beach.

During my time in Tulum Town, I enjoyed dining at Bonita, Burrito Amor, and Palma Central.

TIP: To experience the best of both worlds and manage your budget effectively, consider splitting your accommodation between the beach area and Tulum Town. I personally divided my time in Telum Mexico as follows:

  • 4 nights in Aldea Zama (a developing area with apartments, condos, and vacation rentals, conveniently located between the beach and town areas of Telum Mexico)
  • 1 week in Telum Mexico’s hotel zone, directly on the beach
  • 1 week in Tulum Town, where I found my budget stretched much further for comfortable lodging, even enjoying a villa with a private plunge pool at a hotel in Tulum Town for a few nights!
  • 1 week exploring other parts of the Yucatán Peninsula, expanding my Telum Mexico experience.

DAY 3: Sian Ka’an Biosphere Expedition from Telum Mexico

Alt text: A woman enjoys a boat ride through the mangroves of Sian Ka’an Biosphere Reserve, a nature excursion from Telum Mexico.

One of the most unique and unforgettable natural attractions near Telum Mexico is the Sian Ka’an Biosphere Reserve. This vast protected area, spanning over 2,000 square miles, encompasses a diverse ecosystem of freshwater marshes, mangroves, lagoons, and a barrier reef, providing habitat for a wealth of incredible wildlife.

Due to the sheer size of the reserve, you’ll need to choose between exploring either Punta Allen or Muyil, the two main accessible areas within Sian Ka’an. Regardless of your choice, dedicate a full day to this exceptional Telum Mexico excursion.

  • Sian Ka’an via Punta Allen: This route takes you through mangroves and into the open ocean, offering excellent opportunities for wildlife encounters. Keep an eye out for manatees, crocodiles, dolphins, various bird species, turtles, and more. However, reaching Punta Allen independently is challenging due to poorly maintained roads, making a tour booking essential for a day trip from Telum Mexico.
  • Sian Ka’an via Muyil: This section of the reserve is accessible independently or via a tour. While wildlife sightings are less common here, Muyil offers the chance to explore Mayan ruins and float down ancient Mayan canal systems, providing a different facet of the Sian Ka’an experience near Telum Mexico.

I opted for the Punta Allen tour and highly recommend it to anyone visiting Telum Mexico. Witnessing manatees and crocodiles in their natural habitat was an incredible experience. I booked my tour with Mexico Kan Tours, choosing them for their commitment to responsible tourism and environmental conservation (note: I received a media discount for this tour).

Another fantastic day trip from Telum Mexico is to Coba, an ancient Mayan city located just 45 minutes to an hour away. If you’re spending a week in Telum Mexico, I strongly recommend taking the time to explore these less-crowded ruins and the nearby cenotes.

Coba was a significant Mayan city, known as the nexus of the largest network of raised pathways (sacbe in Mayan) in the ancient Mayan world. Today, you can explore a vast archaeological site dotted with structures, carved stones, and pyramids, the most famous being the Nohoch Mul Pyramid. A unique aspect of Coba is the ability to rent bikes or hire a local Mayan guide with a bicycle carriage to navigate the site. Cycling through the jungle, moving from pyramid to pyramid, is a highlight of visiting these ruins near Telum Mexico.

Cenotes Around Coba Near Telum Mexico

After exploring the Coba archaeological site, make sure to visit at least one of the beautiful cenotes in the area before returning to Telum Mexico. Three well-known cenotes are located close to each other, and you can purchase entrance passes for single or multiple cenotes, depending on your time. I visited Choo-Ha, pictured above!

Highly recommended yoga studios in Telum Mexico include:

Temazcal Ceremonies in Telum Mexico

Temazcales are traditional Mayan sweat lodges, and the ceremonies, led by a shaman, are believed to purify the mind and body. This ancient Mesoamerican ritual is widely available in Telum Mexico, and some hotels even have Temazcales on their property. It’s a popular spiritual experience to undertake while in Telum Mexico. The Temazcal structure resembles a large pizza oven, and the ceremony involves sweating, chanting, singing, and intention-setting.

While I didn’t personally participate in a Temazcal during my Telum Mexico visit, I’ve heard varied opinions on their effectiveness. However, I believe the experience is largely influenced by your mindset. Approach a Temazcal ceremony with an open mind, and you might be pleasantly surprised by the experience. If you try it, I encourage you to share your experience in the comments!

Dining in Telum Mexico

By this point in your Telum Mexico journey, you’ve likely sampled the local culinary scene. However, if you haven’t yet experienced one of Telum Mexico’s upscale dining options, tonight is the perfect opportunity! Along the hotel zone, you’ll find a significant selection of restaurants offering diverse international cuisines and modern interpretations of Mexican flavors. Reservations are recommended, and expect to spend upwards of $100 per person, especially if including drinks. It’s a splurge, but worth it for at least one evening to dress up and experience Telum Mexico after dark.

I’ve compiled a comprehensive list of restaurant recommendations at the end of this guide, but some of my favorite beachfront dining experiences in Telum Mexico include Mezzanine, Rosa Negra, MEZE, and Hartwood!

DAY 6: Explore Chichen-Itza Archeological Site near Telum Mexico

Alt text: The majestic Kukulkan Pyramid stands tall at Chichen-Itza, an iconic Mayan wonder and a must-visit day trip from Telum Mexico.

No trip to this region of Mexico is complete without visiting Chichen-Itza. Dedicate Day 6 to a day trip to see one of the New Seven Wonders of the World, located approximately two hours from Telum Mexico.

Visiting Chichen-Itza from Telum Mexico

Alt text: Panoramic view of the expansive Chichen-Itza Ruins, showcasing the scale and architectural grandeur of this ancient Mayan city accessible from Telum Mexico.

Driving to Chichen-Itza from Telum Mexico is straightforward, and parking is available at the entrance. Upon arrival, you’ll have opportunities to hire a private guide to enhance your exploration. Guides are available both before the parking lot entrance (a Mayan cooperative) and after parking (government-employed guides).

I chose a Mayan guide from the cooperative, and he joined us in our car to the parking area and then entered the site with us, which initially seemed unusual but is standard practice. Our guided tour was excellent! Tours typically last 60-90 minutes and are offered in English or Spanish, with English tours being slightly more expensive.

While you can explore the ruins independently, I highly recommend hiring a local Mayan guide, especially at Chichen-Itza. Their insights and knowledge significantly enrich the experience, providing a deeper understanding beyond what you might observe on your own.

To avoid crowds, arrive at Chichen-Itza near opening time. Early arrival offers the best chance to experience the site with fewer tourists and tour buses.

Cenotes Near Chichen-Itza close to Telum Mexico

Similar to Coba, the area around Chichen-Itza is also home to impressive cenotes. Try to visit at least one!

  • Ik Kil
  • Suytun
  • Lorenzo Oxman

On your final day in Telum Mexico, take it easy and return to the beach to fully absorb the stunning views, warm waters, and tropical breezes before departing. If you haven’t yet visited the Tulum Ruins, Day 7 is the perfect time to explore these iconic ruins overlooking the ocean. As evening approaches, find a spot to watch the sunset over the jungle, and raise a toast to your unforgettable, adventure-filled week in Telum Mexico!

Tulum Ruins in Telum Mexico

While Coba and Chichen-Itza are magnificent Mayan sites, the Tulum Ruins are also a worthwhile visit. In ancient times, Tulum was a significant trading port, evident in the remaining structures. The unique appeal of the Tulum Ruins lies in their dramatic location atop cliffs overlooking the Caribbean Sea, offering breathtaking views unmatched by other ruin sites. Bring your swimsuit, as you can descend a staircase to the beach below the ruins and swim in the ocean during your visit!

Sunset Views in Telum Mexico

Conclude your week in Telum Mexico with a memorable sunset view over the stunning jungle and coastline.

For an upscale experience, consider making a reservation for the AZULIK Sunset Experience. Enjoy cocktails on a chic, boho “nest-like” terrace while mingling and watching the sun dip below the jungle horizon. Azulik’s Kin Toh and Tseen Ja restaurants also offer similar views with a meal, requiring reservations.

Mateo’s is a more casual and popular Mexican restaurant with a rooftop area offering jungle sunset views.

For oceanfront sunset views, Mezzanine is an excellent choice for sunset drinks right by the water.
